Athame. How the hell do you pronounce it? There are many different variations...and who really cares. That is what happens when there are a billion solitaries wandering around out there. The more important thing is what the Athame is used for. In my tradition, the Athame is a representation of the element fire and is kept in the south of the altar. I use my Athame to create the circle, to erase the circle, to purify ritual food, drink, salt, and water. It is generally understood that the blade of the Athame should never draw blood. Usually the handle of the Athame is black, but that can be up to the owner of the knife. I prefer to use a handle color other than black because I feel I can control the flow of energy much better. And here is a really pretty one I found...

Yes, I love my athame and if I was more ambitious I'd take a picture of it and post it, but that really doesn't matter because you've all seen it anyway.
However, it's currently not really charged, I tend to prefer the wand because I usually work with gentler energies. Unless I have to banish strange beings in my room, and even during that time I preferred to use the power of creation instead of the power of destruction.
For some reason I equate the athame with the energies of tearing down or destroying, wielding power over things, establishing authority, etc. It's very...sharp, shall we say. The wand is more docile and better for creation. Or maybe I'm just a nut. Well, we all know I'm a nut, but...that's not the point.....oh bugger!

Evergreens are traditionally a symbol of everlasting life, hence it's use at midwinter festivals celebrating the return of the sun. So in keeping with that tradition, we have used Fir (a softwood/evergreen) for the blade. For the handle, Oak was used not only for it's amplification properties but also to symbolize the Sun's emanate return. Hand carved onto the front cross guard is a stunning Snowflake with carved ice crystals dangling above. The back cross guard features more ice crystal carvings suspended above a Pentacle (the Star of Life) reminding us of Nature's ever turning wheel. The blade is made of Birch, the wood of new beginnings & ideas, change, growth, youth, purification, enchantment, creativity, springtime, renewal and rebirth and is fashioned to an Oak handle. Carved onto the front handle is imagery of a budding Oak leaf and Acorn vine. The vine symbolizes new growth while the acorn is the starting seed of wisdom. The end of the handle has been shaped to resemble a curled spring vine that is starting to emerge and grow. The back of the handle displays the magickal symbol for the Spring Season. Beautiful organza ribbons of lavender, willow green & silver are tied to the base of the cross guard with a sterling silver butterfly charm attached in the center of the ribbons. The blade is made of Apple and is fashioned to an Oak handle. Carved onto the front handle is imagery of the Sun encircling Wheat. The end of the handle has been shaped to resemble flames while the back of the handle displays the magickal symbol for the Summer Season. The blade is made of Apple, the fruit of the Autumn Harvests, and is fashioned to an Oak handle. Carved onto both sides of the cross guard is imagery of a pentacle apple, gourds & fall leaf vines. The Ritual Athame of Samhain: The blade is made of Holly (the symbolic wood of the God and the coming Winter) and is fashioned to an Ebony handle. The handle has been hand carved to resemble the season's special symbol of a Besom adorned with inlaid ivory. All Athames are from Autumns Path
