The pentacle in a nutshell:
Element: Earth Direction: North Color: Green Gender: Male/Female
The pentacle is unique among ritual tools. It can shield and protect (I often use mine to be the base of my portable wards and also in the center of my altar to generate a sacred space). It also keeps and grounds energies that one invites to an area, which is handy when you are working with multiple things and is the reason I keep it around my circle every time I cast one if at all possible.
The pentacle that you put on your altar can be made of almost anything, ornate or simple. Katie's and mine are both made of silver, fairly simple and about three or four inches across. Many people use wood or clay because of the connection to the earth, and will do anything from physically mold their pentacle to burning a pentagram into the center. Sometimes, if you don't have a ritual pentacle, a working pentacle drawn on a piece of paper will suffice. My ward is constructed around such a pentacle. In the craft the practitioner once used a round piece of cork with a starfish in the center. Possibilities are endless; Use your imagination!
