Some of these clues have nothing to do with the character of the Half Blood Prince, however, some of these clues might have more to do with the over all plot of the Harry Potter series.
On page 63, Hagrid describes the Malfoy’s as having bad blood. This might mean that there is more to the Malfoy’s than just being pure blood, just a possibility.
I think that it is important to note that Snape’s office is in the dungeons, as stated on page 78.
Lockhart might be more important to the plot line of the all the stories then we think. On page 91 we get to know him a little better: “But when I was twelve, I was just as much of an nobody as you (Harry) are now. In fact, I’d say I was even more of a nobody! I mean, a few people have heard of you…” That information might be important later.
On pages 93 to 94, Rowling takes great care to introduce a character called Justin Finch-Fletchley. He is in Hufflepuff and has Herbology with the Gryffindors. We are given some very intimate detail about a character that seem to play out later in the book, but they may apply to the 6th book: “My name was down for Eton, you know. I can’t tell you how glad I am I cam here instead. Of course, Mother was slightly disappointed, but since I made her read Lockhart’s books I think she’s begun to see how useful it’ll be to have a fully trained wizard in the family…”
It is apparent later that Justin is Muggle born, but nothing is said about his father, nor are there any other details about his mother.
Just so you know Eton College is the most famous "public school" in the UK (this means it is an independent, fee-paying school). Many famous people went to school there, including both Prince William and Prince Harry. Eton College is an independent, fee-charging, boys-only boarding school for pupils between the ages of 13 and 18. I say there is a good chance that Justin might be the half blood prince, but I can’t find anything else. The cost of going to Eton is approximately $43,000 a year. Justin’s mother is rich.
On page 96, Colin Creevey’s character is introduced. His dad is a milkman, nothing is said about his mother.
Both Colin and Justin are attacked in the book….
Hagird also points out on page 116 that “most wizards these days are half-blood anyways. If we hadn’t married Muggles we’d’ve died out”.
Also, I’ve noticed that events start happing at Hogwarts around the Halloween feast (at least, that’s how it was in the first book and again in the second).
Apparently, the dungeons are very big and on page 125 a dungeon is named “dungeon five”. How many dungeons are there?
On page 133 we see Peeves again, as in the first book Peeves is described as a little man. On page 134 the description continues: “Unlike the ghosts around them, Peeves the Poltergeist was the very reverse of pale and transparent. He was wearing a bright orange party hat, a revolving bow tie, and a broad grin on his wide, wicked face”.
Don’t know if this is important but on page 142 we find out Filch is a Squib. On page 145 we find out what a Squib is: “someone who was born into a wizarding family but hasn’t got any magic powers…Squibs are quite unusual.
Justin makes another appearance on page 146: “After a hurried lunch, he went upstairs to meet Ron in the library, and saw Justin Finch-Fletchley, the Hufflepuff boy from Herbology, coming toward him. Harry had just opened his mouth to say hello when Justin caught sight of him, turned abruptly, and sped off in the opposite direction.
Hum…how important IS Justin?
Four school Houses are named after (page 150):
Godric Gryffindor
Helga Hufflepuff
Rowena Ravenclaw
Salazar Slytherin
On page 152 Professor Binns says “Just because a wizard doesn’t use Dark Magic doesn’t mean he can’t”. Is than an ah-ha moment?
On page 153 the reader sees that both Colin and Justin enter the picture again. Remember, they both are attacked.
Neville thinks he’s a Squib, page 185.
Justin is mentioned again on page 191 and on page 194 when Malfoy let loose a snake in the Dueling Club the snake heads straight for Justin. Harry than speaks Parseltongue, only scaring Justin.
When Harry goes looking for Justin to apologize for the earlier misunderstanding he overhears some Hufflepuffs talking about how Harry must be after him, because he “let slop to Potter he was Muggle-born” page 198.
On page 202 Justin is attacked along with Nearly Headless Nick.
On page 244 Riddle explains he is a half-blood: Muggle father, witch mother.
Fudge is on Dumbledore’s side on page 262 when Malfoy Sr. delivers the message that Dumbledore has been removed from Hogwarts.
Between pages 301 and 302 Harry, Ron and Lockhart use the pipes to get into the Chamber of Secrets and land miles under the school. That was the same line that was used in the first book after the kids fell through the trap door.
How big are the dungeons?
On page 316 we find that Harry’s mother was common and Muggle-born. Common meaning not royalty.
Riddle also says to Harry on page 317 that “There are strange likenesses between us, after all. Even you much have noticed. Both half-bloods, orphans, raised by Muggles. We even look something alike.
Dumbledore explains what Riddle meant on page 329: “Very few people know that Lord Voldermort was once called Tom riddle….he sank deeply into the Dark Arts, consorted with the very worst of our kind, underwent so many dangerous, magical transformations, that when he resurfaced as Lord Voldermort, he was barely recognizable. Hardly anyone connected Lord Voldermort with the clever, handsome boy who was once Head Boy here”.
What is the purpose of these dangerous, magical transformations?
Justin appears one last time on page 339 where he apologized to Harry for suspecting him of the attacks.
So, new characters that were developed in this book were Colin’s, Justin’s and Lockhart’s. There as a lot of work building Justin's character if he's not anyone important!
