Since my first year at ISU, I've picked up an interest in martial arts; especially the philosophy. I've studied tae kwon do as a student of grand master Yong Chin Pak, and in his class I learned more about myself than I did about fighting. I've discovered a martial art with a very unique philosophy. It is called Aikido. It focuses on the ethics of fighting. Aikido focuses on defense, and a master of aikido will not only protect himself, but will protect his or her attacker from injury. "In real budo there are no enemies. Real budo is the function of love. The Way of a Warrior is not to destroy and kill but to foster life, to continually create. Love is the divinity that can really protect us. Without love nothing can flourish. If there is no love between human beings, that will be the end of our world. Love generates the heat and light that sustain the world." --Master Ueshiba, the creator of Aikido. Do you find any particular martial arts interesting?

I rather enjoy learning shotokan karate, I started taking that this last year at Central, they had offered free classes. I was able to advance to green belt and hope to work on my blue this year. I like karate for the power it builds in me and the knowledge that I have the choice to use it for defense or not, I do not like to hurt others. I like karate for it's mental state it creates and the balance I feel when I am practicing it.

Awesome, I got to orange belt in Tae Kwon Do, but I misplaced the belt and I never found it again...so I'm going to have to earn it back. Free classes? Are there any on weekends? I might have to check it out the next time I'm in Pella.

Yeah, I'm with Jae, taking shotokan, green belt. I like martial arts because of the discipline and just have always been interested in the arts since I was little. I would like to learn tai chi because of the calming effect that it has, everyone who knows me will tell you I'm very grounded, so this would be a good art for me!

Usually our karate classes are during the week, but they are free. Jessica Guerrero is our teacher, 2nd degree black belt, she has to get the classes set up through the student senate though, which might take a while because the president transferred and they have to have new elections. However, we might do informal study sessions on some weekends, who knows.
Last year it was tuesday/thursday at 8 pm. I don't know about Jae, but I'd be up for switcheroo teaching, teach us a little about tae kwon do and we can teach some of the basics of shotokan if you're in the area. Technically we are senior students, I guess, and qualified to teach, but it's definitely something we haven't explored yet.

Personally, I would like to become a swordsman. I like katanas. Otherwise a staff. Yay for Kenshin! He proved that a sword can be used to protect.

Yes, we should get together and pool our knowledge on the weapon arts. I for one was always fascinated, but that's because I almost always was a warrior. I remember quite a bit of the sai and sword techniques, and some staff techniques (katie's better at that one). and I'm a green belt in shotokan karate, but I'm so not in the correct shape for it at the moment. I could teach though. I used to be not bad at knife throwing and archery. But I"m currently bowless.

I would love to learn even just a tiny bit of martial arts... my little brother did some for a few years and it looked like a lot of fun. He hated to spar, he was very shy, that's why he eventually stopped.
